We reveal the secrets behind our premium materials

We're often asked how our Ben & Ellie Baby Nappy Change Clutch FEELS so good to the touch. It's often mistaken for real leather and Mums can’t stop trying to figure out how our silky interior is so effectively waterproofed. In fact the 'water on the mat' demonstration has basically become our new party trick. To address the wonder, we've decided to strip down as bare as the baby's bottom you are laying on our Nappy Change Clutch, and reveal the secrets behind our premium materials.

We designed this product with our own babies in mind, the way a mum designs her life – baby first! First and foremost the Nappy Change Clutch is there to keep your baby comfortable and safe during nappy changes. Secondly, it's there to make nappy changes convenient and effortless for you while allowing you to look fabulous while doing it!

When we buy baby clothes, cot sheets and any other items that come in close contact with our babies we focus on their safety, functionality and aesthetics. So where do all these expectations go when we are laying our newborns down bare (literally!) and up to 10 times a day for nappy changes? Don’t we expect an on the go solution for naked nappy changes to be more than a rectangular piece of fabric that matches the lining of our baby bag?

There’s a reason you won’t find us as a ‘free baby bag addition’. Inside and out, we’ve taken the greatest care to select the most functional, safe and beautiful materials to put this luxury nappy change clutch together. These premium pieces partnered with clever design are what keeps this baby change mat firmly in front of the pack

We could have made the B&E Baby Nappy Change Clutch out of anything, but we valued a lightweight, flexible, durable and safe solution. It will probably surprise some to learn that regulations on baby accessory materials outside of toys and clothes are slim, so we had to set our own mum standards when designing our Nappy Change Clutch.

Our high quality, premium vegan leather won't shed or crack if it cops a rub down from a baby wipe on the go and the whole change mat is free from nasties such as BPA, PVC, and phthalates.

Our lining is made from a high-tech Nylon Taslan (which is often used for water resistant sportswear). We’ve made the lining waterproof by backing it with TPU, the same material that is used for waterproofing baby mattress protectors, offering superior protection against those inevitable accidents. This durable lining is soft on babies skin and can be wiped clean or spot washed with a gentle detergent if needed.

Inside, our felt lining and foam headrest provide the ultimate comfort for your baby. We only use PE foam (polyethylene) which is baby safe, ozone friendly and recyclable.

Why is this important? Well put simply BPA, PVC, and phthalates tare bad news for us and our children:

“Polyvinyl chloride, otherwise known as PVC, is considered the most toxic plastic for our health and environment. Phthalates are chemicals used to soften or plasticize PVC products, which through use can be released into the air. The phthalates cling to dust and can then be breathed in by humans. Congress has banned the use of phthalates in toys. However, phthalates in school supplies, flooring and other products still threaten the health of children. Studies have linked PVC and phthalates to respiratory problems. BPA stands for bisphenol A. It is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s. BPA is found in polycarbonate plastics (including PVC) and epoxy resins. (Extract reference - Quadro Australia)”

Who would have thought we needed to avoid so many hidden nasties? Like it already wasn’t hard enough…

So that’s us inside and out. Next time you are investing in a product for your precious bundle make sure you check the tags and consider how often you will use it and how often your baby will come into contact with it. By checking your product purchases are PVC, BPA, lead and phthalate free you will be encouraging a more conscious baby marketplace.
